President Mohammadu Buhari visited Imo State on Thursday, which is considered as the nerve center of the pro-Biafra organization IPOB’s operations in Nigeria’s south-east.
In the South-east, movement for Biafra’s independence has resulted in murders and devastation.
Governor Hope Uzodinma’s government has been tasked with executing projects for Mr Buhari, who is on a one-day working visit.
“What can people do if there are no roads and no security? Absolutely nothing,” Mr Buhari declared in a short address to the state’s legislature in Owerri, the state capital.
He commended Governor Uzodinma’s efforts to improve the state.
The president ordered the construction of a polytechnic, a road project, a flood control tunnel, and a new executive chamber, among other projects.
About the initiatives he observed in the state, the president stated, “Seeing is believing”.
After accepting the governor’s offer and seeing what he wanted me to witness, I’m convinced of his integrity.
What he’s done is impressive to me since I’ve had to deal with the same issue at work to ensure that infrastructure was in place to allow individuals to run their own companies. According to Mr Buhari, “I’m quite happy with what I’ve seen”.
Along with Governor Uzodinma, the President also met with Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi and the APC candidate for the next Anambra gubernatorial race, Andy Uba.
As Buhari visits Uzodimma, businesses and locals avoid it.
Apathy greeted President Muhammadu Buhari’s working visit to Imo State Wednesday, as the bulk of citizens stayed at home while government officials and other leaders went to see the President.
All of the Imo State Government’s appeals to citizens to come out in masse and offer President Muhammadu Buhari a rousing welcome fell on deaf ears, as residents stayed home across the state’s 27 local councils.
In response to the alleged Indigenous People of Biafra’s sit-at-home edict, almost all banking institutions, restaurants, stores, marketplaces, and other economic endeavors in the state did not open for business (IPOB).
Even though IPOB denied giving such order in a statement on Wednesday, the bulk of Imo citizens and residents decided to stay at home to be safe.
Major highways and streets were also empty, particularly within Owerri.
However, Paul Emeziem, Speaker of the House of Assembly, praised Governor Hope Uzodimma for bringing the President to the state. “The governor’s visit has further demonstrated that he genuinely cares about the people of Imo. Uzodimma deserves every praise for luring Mr. President to our state, which comes with a slew of benefits for Imolites and the people of the South East,” he said.
When President Buhari and a few ministers landed at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri at around 9.30 a.m., they headed directly to the Naze-Nekede-Ihiagwa road to launch its first phase.
The president is due to conduct a town hall meeting with leaders of the five states in the South-East geopolitical zone before heading for Abuja.
