Producer Confirms that a script for Sister Act 3 is in the works.
Tyler Perry has revealed that production on the long-awaited Sister Act 3 script has begun. The original Sister Act stars Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier, a cabaret singer who seeks refuge in a convent of nuns from the mob. The film was a cult classic early 1990s family comedy. In 1993, Goldberg’s endearing Deloris, who transforms the convent choir into a soulful gospel group, reappeared for Sister Act 2: Back In The Habbit. Despite reports, however, a third Sister Act film was never made. That is, until the Disney+ investors day in December 2020, when Sister Act 3 was formally announced.
Producer Tyler Perry confirmed to THR that “the script is being written.” Perry re-confirmed his status as a producer, saying that “we brought on an amazing director” in High School Musical series creator Tim Federle. He also stated that Goldberg is “very enthusiastic” about the project’s progress. Perry went on to explain why Sister Act 3 is so well-suited to the twenty-first century, noting, “We need that feel-good moment.” The following is the complete quote:
The script is being written, and I am the producer on it — not directing. We brought on an incredible director [Tim Federle] and Whoopi’s really excited. I think that this is just what the country needs. We need that feel-good moment in the movies where you go, “Oh my God, I left there singing.” That’s my hope.
In addition to Perry, Goldberg has stated that she will produce the picture and reprise her role as Deloris (aka Sister Mary Clarence). While the rest of the ensemble has yet to be announced, fans can expect more of the heartfelt laughter that made the original flicks so popular. Goldberg has already hinted at the possibility of Sister Act 2 cast members appearing, which will no doubt be a thrilling idea for the sequel’s legions of fans. At some time in the near future, Sister Act 3 will be available only on Disney+.
