Introduction
At least one person was killed when a massive earthquake slammed the southwest of Mexico late Tuesday night, producing extensive shaking as far away as Mexico City and creating widespread shaking throughout the region.
As reported by the United States Geological Survey, the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) east-northeast at Los Órganos de San Agustín, about eight miles east of Acapulco, a popular Pacific Coast beach resort city and tourist destination. It was discovered at a depth of 7.8 miles at the time of measurement (12.6 kilometers). According to the Mexican State Civil Protection Secretariat, at least 92 aftershocks were registered, including one with a magnitude of 5.2.
Alarms may be heard in Mexico City just moments before the ground began to shake. Initially, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami warning, but it was later canceled due to lack of evidence.
It was a 19-year-old male called Eliodoro Hurtado who died in the Mexican state of Guerrero, and he was the only person killed so far this year.
Despite the fact that the capital is around 231 miles (372 kilometers) away from the epicenter, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated that there had been no initial reports of significant damage. Several people have lost electricity, according to Sheinbaum, who posted on social media that authorities were attempting to restore power. Following a safety investigation, the city’s metro service said in a statement that train service had been restored.
According to the country’s state-owned utility provider, the Federal Energy Commission (CFE), an estimated 1.6 million consumers were without electricity in Mexico City and four other states, according to a statement. The CFE stated that it was attempting to restore power to the affected areas.
Mexico’s geographic location at the edge of the North American tectonic plate makes earthquakes a common occurrence in the country. Two significant earthquakes shook Mexico in September 2017, and on September 19, 1985, a magnitude-8.0 quake struck the country, killing an estimated 9,500 people in and around the capital of Mexico City. After that earthquake, the city was left with a significant scar, prompting modifications in building rules as well as increased seismic safety measures.
There was no “serious damage” in the state of Guerrero where the earthquake’s epicenter was located, according to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
While no indications of major damage have yet been received from the epicenter, Lopez Obrador stated that officials have received reports of pebbles falling from the sky.
